Social drinking has become rather widespread in the contemporary world. It's sort of a tradition to include a little wine or beer during a meal in various restaurants and houses. Celebration of special days such as birthdays, weddings and other red-letter days is rarely carried out with no alcoholic drinks. It is also commonplace to meet up with friends or acquaintances for a drink or two after a working day. That is considered as a way to stay in touch. Expensive alcohol drinks are also present at business lunches and negotiations. Although it's not an alcohol abuse, it still creates a foundation for interference of alcohol in our life.

Alcohol addicts don't realize the fact that alcohol does harm not only to them, but at the same time it brings pain to their close relatives. The rising amount of cases of innocent deaths, domestic violence, suicides is a consequence of deep penetration of alcohol into our lives. You should take into consideration that alcohol is a form of drug, and alcohol addiction is a form of drugs abuse. The withdrawal from this abuse is as difficult as from drug use.

Antabuse (aka disulfiram) was the first approved medical product used to cure alcohol dependence. Its action is based on stimulating negative reaction in case a person continues drinking while taking antabuse. It interferes with the process of the alcohol conversion and thus stimulates hangover symptoms that are five to ten times greater that usually. A person who drinks while using antabuse confronts such unpleasant symptoms as flushing, thirst, copious vomiting, throbbing headache, hypotension, blurred vision etc. Amid more serious symptoms can be respiratory depression, myocardial infarction, unconsciousness and even death.

As you can see, antabuse is a very strong drug, that is why it can be given only to a person who knows exactly how it works and is absolutely serious about quitting drinking. Antabuse contraindicated to people with a history of heart disease, mental disease or an allergy to antabuse. Pregnant women are also prohibited to use antabuse. So it is a great idea to visit a physician before starting with alcoholism treatment.

Remember that antabuse is efficient only in case of long-term use. If a person takes just one pill, he can simply start drinking in a couple of days again. Good news is that European explorations showed that the longer people take antabuse, the more efficient it is, because they develop a habit of not drinking. So your health is in your hands, as is your future.
